Auroville means City of Dawn. It was founded in 1968 as a place where people of goodwill from all over the world could come together to make a living experiment in human unity and serve a greater dream and greater purpose. It is a site of spiritual and physical research. Presently some 2000 people from 35+ countries and India are gathered in this amazingly creative place, located 160 kms south of Chennai, India, on the Coromandel Coast near Pondicherry. The city-in-the-make is intended for 50.000 inhabitants and works closely with the local population from the surrounding villages in whose midst it is emerging.
