Who am I?

Kaira Is art and craft different? Many of my friends think that I am an art collector, and it has not been an easy to explain that they are not the same! Thanks to Judy Frater's 'Art Sings..' that helped to sort my muddled thoughts...
Though the difference is vague, there are some tangible aspects that can help distinguish between the two. An "art" is something that originated in one person's imagination, expressed in a unique way, mostly on canvas. The idea, image and concept are not usually repeated. On the other hand, a "craft" item need not necesarily be the artisan's imagination. Most of the times, craft involves repetition - of motifs, themes and style that have been practised for years or centuries.
It would be more correct to say "all craft is not art", but "craft can considered as art" when its a rare item, born from imagination and expressed in its own style and medium. The miniature paintings that we see now are probably not "art" anymore, but centuries back when they were first drawn, it was without doubt, an excellent piece of art.
Art is still alive in craft, but we need to look closely to identify and appreciate them. And with some encouragement, we could revive the art in these crafts and invigorate the tradition. Like art patrons, there are many enthusiastic craft collectors too!
